New York City is a wonderful city to explore on foot, but it is also a city easily accessible by several modes of transportation.

Public Transportation

4.5 million rides are taken every day on the subways of NYC, and you should definitely experience this efficient means of getting around while you are here. The bus and subway fare is $2.75 – $3.00 (MetroCard or exact change required). MetroCard vending machines are available at all stations, and when using the MetroCard, free transfers are available between buses and subways. Download the Citymapper app ( on your iPhone or Android device to get real time directions for NYC subways, buses, ferries, and other rail lines.

Taxi/Car Service

NYC yellow cabs, as well as Uber and Lyft, provide quick and easy access within all of the 5 boroughs of New York City. Download the Uber or Lyft app to schedule a ride, or simply hail a yellow cab on the street. For NYC cabs, the fare is $2.50 upon pick up plus $.50 per 1/5 mile, and can be paid by cash or credit card.

Options to/from NYC Airports*

New York City is serviced by three international airports, all 10-20 miles from the city center: John F. Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark (EWR). Travel times vary significantly depending on traffic.  For airport information, detailed ground transportation, and directions visit:

*Please note, most NYC hotels do not provide shuttle service to/from any of the NYC area hotels. Here are some options available to you:

Taxi or Car Service: One-way fares range from $50 – 80 + tolls and tip. This is the certainly the easiest and most straight forward option, but also the most expensive.

Super Shuttle/Airlink: These shuttles provide door-to-door service from area airports for $20-25. You can pre-book or go to the representative at the airport Ground Transportation Desk and arrange directly with them upon your arrival.  (This is an affordable, but often more time-consuming option due to multiple stops). Super Shuttle: 1-877-300-4826; AirLink: 1-212-812-9000

Public Transportation: LaGuardia and JFK airports are accessible by NYC subways and buses. AirTrain and NJ Transit provide service to and from Newark Liberty Airport Station (into Penn Station). For details on this option, please visit:
